I would like to thank Bert Taken, who has guided me throughout the writing of this project.

“In this thesis, Jeanne Magnenat deals with an experience everybody knows : there is this work of art in front of you that makes you feel deeply touched, and you don't find the words to describe why it makes you feel so strongly about it. You maybe even don't want to talk about it because you know it will be impossible to express your feelings. A work can speak to you from beyond the realm of words. And this is not only true for the spectator, it also counts for the maker of her or his own work.

But we irresistibly start talking about what touches us in a work of art. We want to find words, we want – at least partly – to bridge the gap between our emotions and our thoughts. It is an irony in the deep romantic sense of the word : we try to find words knowing we will not succeed, but we keep on trying anyway.

From this perspective Jeanne's text is a romantic venture. She makes the reader embark on a journey in-between intuition and language, words and emotions, seeing and saying. She confronts us with innumerable questions and teaches us to be satisfied with very little answers. But exactly this makes her text so challenging. After reading it, you will be convinced that here is a lot to think about.”
